The teeniest weeniest hiatus ><

You know life – that irritating but persistant cork to the poverbiale bottleneck of creativity? Well, it’s back, and any regular followers will probably ahve figure dthat we’ve been a bit slow in chunking out updates lately.

But never fear! We’re sitting back, takinga  nice siwg of hot tea, getting on with life’s work (and my god there’s a lot of it) and will be ready becak and refreshed for December – just in time for Crimbo :D

Please forgive us, and I hope to see you very soon.

Love, n’ chesnuts,

November’s Themes: Bonfire Night & Thanksgiving

We’ve gota  special theme for you today because you can choose from two! we have Bonfire Night, the classic British Celebration, or Thanksgiving, the classic American celebration. Whichever side of the pond you’re on, I hope you enjoy!

~November The 5th: Bonfire Night~

Now, if you permit me to quote wikipedia…

Guy Fawkes Night (also known as Bonfire Night, Cracker Night, Fireworks Night) is an annual celebration on the evening of the 5th of November. It celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of the 5 November 1605 in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London, England.
It is primarily marked in the United Kingdom where it was compulsory, by Royal Decree, to celebrate the deliverance of the King until 1859, but also in former British colonies including New Zealand, parts of Canada, and parts of the British Caribbean.[citation needed] Bonfire Night was also common in Australia until the 1980s[citation needed], but it was held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June some states (e.g., New South Wales) and 5 November in others (e.g., Victoria). Festivities are centred on the use of fireworks and the lighting of bonfires.

V for Vendetta

Photobucket

I recently went ‘round a guy’s house to watch this, being assured that it’s one of the best films ever made. Take that with a pinch of whatever you wish but, being directed by the Matrix brothers, I had high hopes. And they weren’t disappointed :)

The plot : England has turned into a bible waving, fascist, Orwellian-style totalitarian state. Not pretty. Enter the masked hero (or anti-hero, depending on your views) named only V, who has a deliciously eloquent way with words. V models himself on Guy Fawkes, and it soon becomes clear he intend to blow up Parliament (as the original Guy Fawkes failed to do). Let the fireworks begin….

A clever film, with twists and lush characterisation, gripping action, lovely cinematography and great humour, I thoroughly recommend it to watch for your very own 5th of December, no matter what part of the world you live in. For people unfamiliar with the 5th of November and Bonfire night, this is a great film that can sort of act like an introduction to the legend. A brilliant film for anyone (and for matrix fans, there’s even a little scene that is practically bullet-time buwahaha!)

Plus, because the script has moments of pure genius, here’s a few quotes ^_~ :

V: [Evey pulls out her mace] I can assure you I mean you no harm.
Evey Hammond: Who are you?
V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey Hammond: Well I can see that.
V: Of course you can. I’m not questioning your powers of observation I’m merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.
Evey Hammond: Oh. Right.

Creedy: Whatchya gonna do, huh? We’ve swept this place. You’ve got nothing. Nothing but your bloody knives and your fancy karate gimmicks. We have guns.
V: No, what you have are bullets, and the hope that when your guns are empty I’m no longer be standing, because if I am you’ll all be dead before you’ve reloaded.

V: Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

Bonfire Night Party Foods

Photobucket
When you’re out there at night watching your fireworks and huddled around your bonfire, it can get pretty cold. And there is no more a welcome distraction then good food that’s liable to make your teeth rot :D

There are a number of great recipes in the above link, including the legendary toffee apples. If you’re not a fan of toffee (like me) you can substitute it for chocolate apples with lots of hundreds and Thousands sprinkled on top. Guaranteed to yank out any loose teeth-haha

~Thanksgiving~

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a traditional North American holiday, which is a form of harvest festival. The date and whereabouts of the first Thanksgiving celebration is a topic of modest contention, though the earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration was on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida.[1] Despite any scholarly research to the contrary, however, the traditional “first Thanksgiving” presented by Chief longnhard Jai is venerated as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621.

Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States.

Turkey Day Bow

Photobucket

Alright, yes I am a Brit, and yes these thanksgiving recommendations are probably stepped in cliché, but gimmie a break ey? ^_~

Our first recommendation for a spiffy thanksgiving is this little guy- an utterly adorable turkey clip. I love it’s sweet little face and how it’s made out of ribbons in such bright happy colours. You can happily embrace your inner turkey with this. Ater all, holidays are an excuse to wear big novelty accessories ^_^

Dreamcatcher Key Chains

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_list_16&listing_id=12691900

Photobucket

Thanksgiving was a time when Native Americans and colonisers came together in peace, so it seems the perfect time to explore your inner Amerindian :) Now before certain individuals get whiney about ‘pillaging their culture’ or whatever, I believe that culture is for everyone. So what if you make it more available for the wider public? People have been commercializing folk art and religious art since it began. So – with no shame, and with plenty of respect -I point you towards these nifty dreamcatcher key rings by ‘fivefootfury13’. They’re adorable beaded and come in many colours, with a beautifully string dream-catching web in the middle. A beautiful find for any time of the year.

Also, if you wnat to make dremacatcher, here’s a great tutorial:

These made me giggle. If sitting around stuffing your face with a sumptuous feast isn’t enough- you could always dress up like your local Pilgrims, Patriots and Amerindians with these fun outfits. As far as Pilgrims go, the guy with the biggest hat wins :p

Internet problems sorted, roll on November!

Howdy, DT here again. I’m just dropping a note to say that there were no worries- my internet worked out just great so there should be no delays in the blog. Nevertheless I hope you enjoy October’s enteries early ^_~

For next month, we’ll not only have an extra theme but a DOUBLE theme. For the Yanks we have Thanksgiving, and for the Limeys we have Bonfire Night. Both are great holidays, so I hope you’ll enjoy them :)

We’ll all see you soon ladies and gents

~Octo Eight~

~October’s Cool Collective~

Welcome to October’s issue of Dragongems! This issue comes a little earlier than normal because I predict internet problems would have sckrewed up our shedule, but hey- no problemo. It just means you get an extra slice of goodness early ^_~

We’ve got a jam-packed issue for your enjoyment, as well as some new sections… so, without further adue, to the items!

As usual, this lovely artist comes out of my ‘keep’ bucket in Deviantart. I love Effe’s work because it’s a lovely mix of anime, gothic, fantasy and fashion-based art. The colours are beautiful and lush and worn by beautiful ladies and gents. Well worth a look in her gallery, as I can’t possibly put all the lush art up here ^_~

Wing Earrings by HerAlterEgo
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_8&listing_id=15019013
Photobucket

I’ve had my eyes on these wing designs for a long time. The design has appeared on earrings, necklaces and bracelets in high street shops and elsewhere, but nothing has 100% caught my attention as being pretty enough. Then I found these. For one I love the soft rainbow effect and the dangly jewels. Really beautiful and feminine, and they look like they would frame your face beautifully. If you have pierced ears (and are a bit of an angel-freak like me) then these are a lovely buy.

‘A Lady ought’ by UntamedMenagerie
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=cat2_galley_5&listing_id=15258968

Photobucket

An original take on the classic Victorian silhouette idea, I love this necklace. It’s elegant, interesting, and would look stunning in a mono-colour outfit like a low cut white dress or a plain white t-shirt. You can choose between having it as a pendant or a brooch.

Dream Weaver Bracelet by Morningglorydesigns
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vt_related_3&listing_id=15040133

Photobucket

This beautiful bracelet is really something special. I love the jewels used here, the Victorian romantic design and the use of dragonflies in this bracelet. Dragonflies are my fave insect – dragonflies and damselflies. The former are hyuge, the later are little and sweet and will happily sit on your hand…at any rate, this bracelet is perfect for any fellow dragonfly lovers. You can even buy some gorgeous matching earrings

Poetsummer’s Steampunk Jewellry
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=cat2_galley_15&listing_id=14036774

 Photobucket

Steampunk is cool. I don’t think there’s much argument in that. It’s an awesome blend of modern and old – cyber and steam. It’s vintage recycling, yet original paying homage to history. Poetsummer’s steampunk jewellery on etsy are all excellent, but my favourites are the sparrow necklace (above) and the Edgar Allen Poe necklace (below). The Sparrow has lovely watch parts to decorate it, and the Poe pendant has tiny vials of watch parts, cut out pictures and a lovely collage effect. Definitely cool for history and literature fans :D

Egyptian Scarab Necklace by ragtrader
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=14715693
Photobucket

I’ve always loved Egyptian things, ever since I was a little kid, so when I spotted this I thought I had to show it to y’all. This scarab beetle is a lovely example, holding up the sun, with it’s wings spread in a very aesthetically pleasing circle. The texture and design of this reminds me of something form the 30s – or somewhere between art noveue and art Deco. It’d look great with any outfit.

Lucinda the butterfly pin(or magnet) by IndieAndie

To me, this is somewhere between pretty and creepy, but at any rate is still pretty cool. She will certainly look classy on a vintage jacaket or bag, or sticking the notes up on your fridge.

It seems that we’re paying homage to the Unemployed Philosopher’s Guild this month, but it’s an awesome site, so make sure to check it out :)

Dissapearing Chesire Cat mug

http://www.philosophersguild.com/index.lasso?page_mode=Product_Detail&cat=mugs&skip=2&item=0025
Photobucket

Now this just makes me giggle. I love disappearing mugs, and this is an especially good example, and for $12.95 (about £7) I’d say it’s a bargain. If you love Alice in Wonderland, you can’t be without this spiffy mug, watch the Chesire cat disappear to leave behind his famous grin (animation of the process on the site). Find it at the Unemployed Philosopher’s guild.

Shaving Jesus Mug
http://www.philosophersguild.com/index.lasso?page_mode=Product_Detail&item=0981

Photobucket

Indulging on the changing-mug obsession, I came across this. I love this cheeky mug of Jesus getting a shave. It cracks me up, and I think it’d be a great present for the Christian you know, or any stubborn atheists. I don’t thin I’d ever get bored of this-haha

Wind up Freud Musical Pillow
http://www.philosophersguild.com/index.lasso?page_mode=Product_Detail&item=0132

Photobucket

I’ve never heard of a musical pillow before, and the Unemployed Philosopher’s Guild has a whole section of them. One of these is the Freud one, which has a lovely looking Victorian design. Love him or Loathe him, Freud is still pretty cool in pillow form ^_~

Nightmare Before Christmas Ceramic storage Jars
http://www.funtocollect.com/nightmareceramicstoragejars.html
Photobucket

I totally squee’d when I saw these. I love the Nightmare Before Christmas, and these are such a refreshing change from the repetitive and done-to-death Jack head designs etc. These would work brilliantly as cookie jars, for storing sugar or flower, sweets, Tea or confess, or even as pocket-money storage. If i had them, I’d be inclined to take them out at any opportunity and flaunt ‘em. They rock. Period. >:D

I was direct to this by one of the lovely ladies over at The Anticraft and this T-shirt is a must for any crafty or arty ladies. Not only does it shout out to the world how creative you are, but it embraces the ultimate coolness of ninjas! I wouldn’t cross a ninja with some knitting needles, especially if they’re DPNS…
Makre sure to check out the rest of the Snorgtees site – there are so many awesomely cool prints that i couldn’t possibly stick them all up here :D

With our powers Combined…t-shirt

When the platypus was first discovered and a stuffed version brought to prove its existence, no-one believed that it was actually a real beast. At the time there was a fashion for hacking bits of animals off and sticking them together in stuffed form in order to make people think they were real (eg ‘mermaids’) etc. Well, you can’t blame them for being sceptical when you look at one of these little guys. Again it’s from Snorgtees. I love it to pieces, and it’s sure to crack a smile with anyone who reads it :)

This month’s music pick is disturbed’s new album ‘Indestructible’. I’ve always loved disturbed and got into them from their ‘liberate’ album, and later their older (but excellent) ‘the sickness’ album. Heavy, melodic at times and generally awesome, I thoroughly recommend checking them out if you’re a rock fan- heavy or otherwise. This album is a prime example of their awesomeness. Click the link above for the video of their title single, ‘indestructible’.
Or, you can grab their album off amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Indestructible-Disturbed/dp/B0014EAYQQ

Octo: Getting Ready for Halloween…

 Firstly…

Hi guys, DT here. I hope you enjoyed Rouge’s first post, she’ll be putting stuff up a regular intevals, so make sure to check back often for your unique slice of coolness ^_~

As ever, Dragongems also has your monthly doses of spiffiness fo ryou to browse through. This month things will be coming a little earier than normal, since I’m moving house back to uni-land and it might be a while before I can get the internet again (if things go badly ><).

But, as well as the goodies of a new contributor, we have a new section – the special event post. Hopefully each month we can root out a holiday or special event to have a themed post on. For October, naurally, we’re showcasing Halloween :D

So, enter the time vortex with me if you will, and let’s jump to October and see what we’ve got…

Halloween Special Event Post

Well laides and gents, it’s soon to be October, and we all know what that means – Halloween! Yup, dust off your skulls, get out yer disembollowing knives and get ready to dance to MJ’s ‘Thriller’ until you can’t stand up anymore. This Dragongems Halloween special should make sure that you’ve got all the goulies and ghosties you need to have a rockin Oct 31st ^_~

Scary Scarecrows by etsy’s grimvisions
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=6954347
Photobucket
For any fans of the newer Dr.Who series, little says freaky n’ scary like a Scarecrow sack. I don’t know what it is about them, but they’re freaky. Probably it’s the shrunken head inside – the way it looks like a shroud, or a sack form a hangman’s noose with the head still inside. At any rate, you’re bound t love this little creepy Scarecrow. Make sure to check out more of ‘Grimvisions’ stuff in the shop – all are great for haloween.

Alien & Predator Costumes
http://www.halloween31.com/pages-productinfo-product-3428/rubies-alien-vs-predator-avp-pred-alien-mask.html

It seems that I was one of the few people on this earth that actually enjoyed Alien vs predator, rather than bitching about it like Billy-o. So here I give you a nifty AVP costume for you to wear. If nothing else, the designs of the Alien, Predator and the Alien-predator-baby-thingy are pretty darn awesome. And who wouldn’t enjoy leaping around in this?

It’s one of my regrets that I don’t live anywhere where they have the ‘day of the dead’ celebration. I love the art and the party-feeling of it. Staring Death in the face and having a good laugh. Of course, in many ways Halloween is just like that, in spirit anyway. So I give you this ‘day of the dead’ styled Wallet for you to keep your pennies in for Haloween (or, indeed any season!). I love the watercolour effect and the vibrancy of this. Lovely. Mkae sure ot check out more of the agorables shop.

New Author!

Well, hi everybody. I’m the new contributer/author of this blog. Along with Dragontamer, We’ll be bringing you lots of awesomeness, and more often.

My speciality, in case you were wondering, is cheap stuff. I enjoy shopping for stuff that you can buy for under 30 dollars. Usually handcrafted stuff on  etsy, Paranormal and “Occult” supplies, books, and generally shopping on the cheap.
And so, while I’m here, might as well show off some wonderful things I’ve found recently.

 Clothing:

There has been a trend recently towards homemade undergarments. I absolutely love underwear (It’s a bit of an obsession), and I’m always looking for stuff thats cute and cheap. A quick search on etsy produced a few bits of awesomeness.

My favorite handmade undergarment creator on etsy is CherryPiePunk. Here’s some beautiful things for you ponder (Hover over the picture to see the prices):
Cupcake Bra-$8.00
Axes-$14.00

Jewelry:
Jewelry is my other obsession, especially handcrafted jewelry. My favorite necklace is a tatted cross that a friend made for me. With that in mind, I again went to Etsy (my favorite place to go shopping) to find something that you all might like:

Death Skull Pendant-$8.00
Skull Pendant by Magpiemolly
Jack Skellington Necklace-$10.00
Jack Skellington Necklace by AgonysDecay

More coming soon, I promise!

I watched this artist on my devianatart a while ago, but i just had to share him with you. Like many people nowadays his art is digital, but if you have ever needed proof that the digital media is indeed a valid and beautiful art medium, ‘Omen’s work is a good contender to change your mind. I love the fantasy realism, the use of light and his stunning outdoor, often dusty scenes. Covering many different aspects of the genre in stunning quality – the gallery speaks for itself, so hop to it! :)

I came across these in Etsy, and I couldn’t help but like them. True, perhaps the quality could be better, but I have never come across a purse made form a book cover before. It’s an awesome way to recycle broken or rubbish books (lol) and show off you literary savvy. We’ve all seen those juice-packet / pocky bags, but this is pretty darn nifty if you’re into your retro. She’s even got a ‘harry potter and the goblet fo fire’ version for all you Potter-fans :D
On her etsy site she does many book cover-bags, laser disk bags, and more retro coolness. Why not check it out?

The Japanese Shop – Lucky owls

http://www.thejapaneseshop.co.uk/category/111/Lucky_Owls

Photobucket

The Japanese Shop is always a pleasure of mine whenever I can catch a rare occasion to visit York. They are a shop dealing (quelle suprise!) in authentic Japanese items. Not only are what they sell beautiful, but – should you be lucky enough to pop into their shop in York, Harrogate or Chester (England), their level of service is 100% excellent. The shops are light, the staff friendly, you can even have your purchases painstakingly wrapped for free. It is an absolute pleasure every time.
But, ladies and gentlemen, that is the shop. If you’re not near, the website is well worth a look. (www.thejapaneseshop.co.uk). When I went in the last time I was in York I spotted an adorable new addition to their usual shelf of lucky cats and such – lucky owls. Frankly, they’re adorable. Apparently, Owls are one of the most popular lucky charms in Japan because owl in Japanese is called ‘fukurou’ which means ‘no hardship’. These little guys can come individually – stacked little little totem poles, with mini owls, or as charming family groups. While I came out with a lucky cat (I’d been waiting all year to go bug my family back to the shop to get a proper one), it took all my willpower not to pick up one of these little guys.
If you want to avoid the cliché of a lucky cat (after all, Japenese-i-ness is pretty popular these days), why not go for one of these instead? They even come with their own cushion.
And look: i didn’t say the word ‘Kawaii’ once :)

I thought I’d indulge my broody side with this pick of awesomely cool kid’s clothes. Hailed as ‘the stuff you buy when you’re a mum form the seventies’, Kinchi’s shop certainly seems to do exactly what it says on the tin. The skirts, especially, are lovely – filled not only with the 70’s vibe, but also the folksy/hippie colour and pattern you can’t help but enjoy. This bird skirt is just charming. You shodul definitely check the shop out if you have kids (or are a little pathetic like me and happily imagine outfits for your future children XD). If your kid (or imagi-kid :p) is a tomboy, a non cross-dresser or a little forest dweller, you should like this funky trousers too ^_~
